Nussle: Keep credit union advocacy consistent through change

Credit unions’ presence in front of lawmakers – with four committee appearances to testify before Congress since March – is just one way advocacy efforts are maintaining consistency through change in Washington, D.C. America’s Credit Unions President/CEO Jim Nussle emphasized the importance of strong advocacy outreach in a CUInsight op-ed Thursday.

“The best thing credit unions can do in response is to remain consistent and strong in our advocacy efforts.  After all, the credit union difference persists no matter who serves in office, in good economies and bad,” he wrote. “America’s Credit Unions’ political and legislative teams—along with our League and credit union partners—are diligently working to ensure attention remains on credit union issues amid change.”

Nussle highlighted how the testimony of Great Lakes Credit Union COO Elizabeth Osborne is an example of keeping the credit union perspective front and center before a vital House committee. Osborne’s testimony before the House Financial Services Committee last week was the fourth Congressional appearance in three months by an America’s Credit Unions representative – the most of any financial trade association.

“No matter what comes our way, credit unions will continue to fight for policies that increase access to credit unions and push back against policies that hamper it,” Nussle wrote. “Credit union advocacy works to lay strong foundations, grounded in the legislative process and proper rulemaking, so credit unions have stability so matter who occupies what chamber, or who is running which agency.”
