In-district meetings continue credit union conversation with policymakers

Leagues and credit unions took part in lawmaker meetings in Florida, Georgia and South Dakota this past week, bringing elected officials and staff together during the August recess to discuss important credit union priorities.

The League of Southeastern Credit Unions (LSCU) hosted Rep. Darren Soto, D-Fla., at Orlando Credit Union.  The discussion centered on fraud and financial institution liability, the importance of the credit union tax status, credit unions’ role as consumer protectors, and more.

LSCU also hosted Sen. Raphael Warnock’s (D-Ga.) economic advisor at Georgia’s Own Credit Union for a similar discussion. Warnock chairs the Senate Banking Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Protection.

Staff from Sen. John Thune’s (R-S.D.) office met with Chesney Garnos, director of political and grassroots affairs at the Dakota Credit Union Association, who also took part in a local event featuring the senator. Thune — the Senate Minority Whip — has sponsored credit union-backed legislation to modernize e-signature requirements.
