The Trump Administration and the Slate of Ever Changing Orders
Do you wake up in the morning and say, “man, I just want to spend hours studying what’s going on with the government and how it affects credit unions?” If so, that’s great. However, for those of you that don’t have the time or desire to do that, I would like to introduce you to America’s Credit Unions’ Executive Order Tracker.
Since taking office on January 20, 2025, President Trump has signed a significant number of executive orders addressing a variety of issues, including the economy, energy, and artificial intelligence, many of them having potential impacts to credit unions. In addition to the new orders, President Trump revoked 78 of President Biden’s executive orders, many of which focused on politically sensitive areas such as gender, immigration, climate change, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. Some of President Trump’s executive orders address these same topics.
For many of these executive orders, it is unclear how or if they will impact credit unions. Enter the Executive Order tracker. America’s Credit Unions’ Regulatory Advocacy team has spent hours studying what’s going on with the government and how it affects credit unions. Yeah, that’s what they wake up thinking about. Based on this study, they have compiled summaries of the most relevant executive orders and memoranda that could potentially impact American credit unions. Please keep in mind that how these executive orders and memoranda will ultimately affect credit unions and financial markets is very fluid and opaque, as none of them directly target or mention credit unions. The tracker is not intended to be a comprehensive review; however, the Regulatory Advocacy team will continuously work to update the tracker to reflect the most recent state of affairs.
Here are a few of the executive orders discussed in the tracker:
• Eliminating 10 Regulations For Each New Regulation Issued
• Regulatory Freeze Pending Review
• Strengthening American Leadership in Digital Financial Technology and
• Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferencing
How do you access the tracker? All you have to do is be the best you can be by working for a credit union. The Executive Order Tracker is an America’s Credit Unions member only benefit that can be found here. If your credit union is not a member of America’s Credit Unions, ask your CEO why not, and provide them with this link. Alternatively, you can start a new credit union and join our association. It’s easy, all you need is a community, workplace, or association and a desire for affordable financial services.
Special note:
America's Credit Unions has heard from credit unions and leagues that credit unions members are contacting credit unions regarding the Department of Government Efficiency's accessing the U.S. Department of the Treasury Fiscal Service’s payments system. To assist credit unions, we have created the following statement for credit unions to share with their members.
--------
We are aware of the new Department of Government Efficiency’s accessing of the U.S. Department of the Treasury Fiscal Service’s payments system. We understand that this has caused confusion and concern for many of our members. At this time, there is no indication that personal financial or identifying information has been compromised or shared outside of the Treasury or the federal government. The Treasury Department has assured lawmakers that ‘read only’ access was provided to individuals with security clearances and privileges appropriate for viewing this information. Furthermore, we are unaware of any changes made in the system, there have been no impacts to payments at this time, and there have been repeated assurances that payments related to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid will not be impacted at any time. We are committed to safeguarding your personal financial information.
--------
Credit unions should also note and may want to inform their members that a judge has temporarily limited access to the payments system, prohibiting the two employees who have been given access to "read-only" mode and prohibiting them from sharing data with anyone outside the agency.
