Bessent meets with Congressional leaders, tax writers on extending cuts

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent convened a meeting Tuesday with a group of policymakers including White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., Speaker of the House Mike Johnson R-La., Senate Finance Committee Chairman Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith, R-Mo. The group discussed the importance of permanently extending the Trump Tax Cuts, according to the Treasury.

America’s Credit Unions, leagues, and credit unions continue to engage with the leaders present at Wednesday’s meeting on the importance of the credit union tax status and that any change to it would result in a tax increase on more than 140 million Americans. Century Credit Union President/CEO Joshua Wallace wrote in the Southeast Missourian—which serves a large number of Smith’s constituents—over the weekend asking Smith to oppose any attempt to remove the credit union tax status.

Stakeholders should use the Don’t Tax My Credit Union campaign website to write their elected officials in support of the credit union tax status.

America's Credit Unions’ Don’t Tax My Credit Union Member Activation Program site has a press kit with resources to help write op-eds, letters to the editor, and other outreach resources to help activate grassroots action.
