More than 150K messages sent in support of credit union tax status

Credit unions sent nearly 150,000 messages to elected officials since America’s Credit Unions launched its Don’t Tax My Credit Union action alert earlier this month – and more are needed. With elected officials back in Washington, D.C., and the government funded through the end of the fiscal year, tax reform legislation is being drafted NOW.  It’s vital to keep up the momentum in protecting the credit union tax status by activating members, staff, board members, and communities.

Campaign resources, including logos, media engagement, social media graphics and more, are available on the Member Activation Program Don’t Tax My Credit Union site.

“The conversations are happening, and tax writers are working out legislative text right now, which is why the unified credit union voice must be heard at this moment,” said America’s Credit Unions President/CEO Jim Nussle. “Credit unions and their 140 million members did not vote for a tax increase, and continued grassroots support of the credit union tax status is how we continue to protect it.”

The California Credit Union League and Nevada’s Credit Unions has collectively generated nearly 70,000 messages through both its own grassroots system and America’s Credit Unions’ Don’t Tax My Credit Union website. California has five House members on the Ways and Means Committee, where tax reform framework is taking place.

“This incredible effort was made possible through the strong collaboration between credit union leaders and their marketing teams, who activated their members to engage in this critical fight,” said Stephanie Cuevas, senior vice president of government affairs of the California Credit Union League and Nevada’s Credit Unions. “As we’ve even heard from our own credit unions, this level of engagement is rare and key to making our voices heard. We’re thrilled with the results we’re seeing.”

The Utah Credit Union League, which has two House Ways and Means Committee members in its state delegation, leads all states with the number of lawmaker contacts sent through America’s Credit Unions’ grassroots action center with more than 27,000 messages sent.

“Our credit unions are, quite frankly, amazing. They’re on the team. They’re vested in advocacy and serving their members. Here you see the reciprocating synergy: they take care of their members, and now their members take care of them,” said Scott Simpson, president/CEO of the California, Nevada, and Utah Credit Union Leagues.

Data on the credit union difference, and how to use it while engaging with policymakers, is available on the Credit Union Impact Dashboard.
