More than 323K send messages to support tax status as engagement continues
Momentum for the Don’t Tax My Credit Union campaign is building, as credit union stakeholders collectively sent more than 323,000 messages to members of Congress.
Credit unions around the country continue to activate members using Member Activation Program (MAP) resources and urging them to sent comments though the Don’t Tax My Credit Union site.
John Dwyer, CEO of EastRise Credit Union, joined the Association of Vermont Credit Unions (AVCU) podcast to share their response to the credit union tax status threats, including how his credit union has actively reached out to members, and urged other credit unions to make their voice heard.
“If we were to be taxed, we would lose something that really differentiates a credit union,” Dwyer said. “We would lose the ability to invest in our community at the level we’ve been able to for so long. We’d probably lose the ability to make a demonstrable difference for our members like we have for years.”
Dwyer and AVCU President/CEO Joe Bergeron agree that any change to the credit union tax status would result in a major, immediate shake-up how the entire industry works, with members and communities ultimately suffering because of it.
Providing examples of credit unions’ impact on members is a key component in this effort. Recent America’s Credit Unions blog entries are based on stories shared by leagues and credit unions that detail several aspects of the Don’t Tax My Credit Union campaign, including:
- How Mid Oregon Credit Union has used MAP for more than a decade to successfully activate members;
- How AIM Credit Union in Iowa stepped up for a member in need of a business loan, who later became a board member and shared his story with members of Congress to advocate for credit unions.
- How the credit union tax status helps credit unions offer personalized, member-first services, with leaders from UP Federal Credit Union and Abound Credit Union sharing personal stories of the credit union difference.
