Nussle, Hunt analyze outlook for credit unions in 119th Congress

The credit union outlook for the 119th Congress was the primary topic for America’s Credit Unions President/CEO Jim Nussle and Chief Advocacy Officer Carrie Hunt as they joined  the latest Vermont Credit Unions On Air podcast. They discussed the the political landscape for credit unions in 2025 with host Joe Bergeron, president of Association of Vermont Credit Unions.

Asked what is the biggest credit union advocacy issue in this congress, Nussle described the importance of keeping the credit union tax status in place.

“This is the time to tell our stories about how we use the tax advantage to the advantage of the communities that we serve and the members that we serve and ensuring that people have financial well-being. That was our charter,” Nussle said. “Job one is making sure [the tax status] is preserved.”

Hunt discussed the CFPB’s track record and what the bureau could look like in the new administration.

“The CFPB is supposed to be focusing a significant amount of time on getting consumers to understand how finances work. It’s always better to prevent issues from happening at the outset rather than trying to solve things when it's too late. I feel like the CFPB is just one huge, colossal, failed experiment,” she said. “Whether you’re Republican or whether you're a Democrat, we need to acknowledge that and find a way to actually move forward because this is just not working.”

The conversation also covered interchange legislation, cannabis banking bills, impact of tariffs, and more. Click the link to listen to the entire episode.
