Credit union advocacy continues in D.C., home districts
It was a week of relentless credit union advocacy, both on Capitol Hill and in-district. America’s Credit Unions and league leaders met with key policymakers to emphasize the credit union difference and positive impact as Congress considers tax reforms.
In Washington, D.C., President/CEO Jim Nussle joined with the Dakota Credit Union Association for a meeting with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D.
Together with Chief Advocacy Officer Carrie Hunt and Senior Vice President of Advocacy Greg Mesack, Nussle also met with S. 110 co-sponsor Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, and freshman Senator Jim Banks, R-Ind., a member of the Senate Banking Committee, among others on Capitol Hill.
With the House in recess, advocacy meetings also took place outside of Washington, D.C. New Jersey credit unions met with Rep. Herb Conaway, D-N.J., at the CrossState Credit Union Association’s Hamilton, N.J., office.
Conaway is a new member of Congress and member of the House Small Business and Veterans’ Affairs Committees. The discussion touched on the Small Business Administration, economic policy, and regulatory matters affecting financial institutions. Credit union leaders also shared how they support local businesses and communities with an emphasis on financial education and economic growth.
Rep. Zach Nunn, R-Iowa, met with the Iowa Credit Union League and Iowa credit unions, while Family Trust Credit Union and Carolinas Credit Union League advocates hosted Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C.
These meetings are part of an ongoing advocacy effort, with leagues and credit unions visiting in Washington, D.C., last week as well. More meetings are planned in the coming weeks as tax policy discussions continue.
