Special Edition: Credit Union Member Concerns Regarding DOGE Access to Treasury Payments System
America's Credit Unions has heard from credit unions and leagues that credit union members are contacting credit unions regarding the Department of Government Efficiency's accessing of the U.S. Department of the Treasury Fiscal Service’s payments system. America's Credit Unions has also been directly contacted by individual members of credit unions on this matter. To assist credit unions, we have created the following statement for credit unions to share with their members.
--------
We are aware of the new Department of Government Efficiency’s accessing of the U.S. Department of the Treasury Fiscal Service’s payments system. We understand that this has caused confusion and concern for many of our members. At this time, there is no indication that personal financial or identifying information has been compromised or shared outside of the Treasury or the federal government. The Treasury Department has assured lawmakers that ‘read only’ access was provided to individuals with security clearances and privileges appropriate for viewing this information. Furthermore, we are unaware of any changes made in the system, there have been no impacts to payments at this time, and there have been repeated assurances that payments related to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid will not be impacted at any time. We are committed to safeguarding your personal financial information.
--------
Credit unions should also note and may want to inform their members that a judge has temporarily limited access to the payments system, prohibiting the two employees who have been given access to "read-only" mode and prohibiting them from sharing data with anyone outside the agency.
Please note, this is an ever evolving situation. As always, America's Credit Unions is monitoring the situation and will inform credit unions of any changes that occur.
