Overview
Almost every decision you make at your credit union has an impact on the bottom line, making financial knowledge profoundly important for credit union decision makers. Join TEAM Resources' Tim Harrington for this eSchool and form a solid grasp of the key fiscal terms, concepts and functions that are important for boards and committees to understand.
Attendees will leave able to:
- Read and analyze balance sheets
- Understand the role of risk in financial decision making
- Utilize asset-liability management (ALM) in financial analysis
- Calculate and evaluate key ratios
Board & committee members who attend can earn the Credit Union Board Financial Literacy Certificate, which was designed to aid in meeting the NCUA requirement for financial literacy.

- Exam instructions are provided with the training. After registration, navigate to the training to view those instructions.
- The deadline to complete the exam is December 31, 2025.
Note: Coming in 2026, new versions of this eSchool will require completing a closed book exam to earn the Credit Union Board Financial Literacy Certificate.
Who Should Attend?
The training is beneficial for credit union board and committee members who are looking to gain a better understanding of their financial responsibilities at the credit union and want to satisfy their NCUA requirement for financial literacy.
This eSchool will take approximately 6 hours to complete - each module is approximately 60 minutes.

- Where does capital come from?
- Allowance for loan losses primer
What will be covered:
- Some useful accounting principles
- Learn the cruelties of “accrual” accounting
- Delinquencies and charge-offs: What’s right for your business model?
- Calculating the allowance for loan losses
What will be covered:
- Understand the relationship between CAMEL ratings and your credit union’s financial health
- Comprehend what capital is
- Learn why capital is important
- Identify how much capital your credit union needs
What will be covered:
- ROA: How we measure profit
- Spread analysis: The essential profit equation
- Understand the elements of profit
- How to measure your business model’s success
- Why non-interest income is essential
What will be covered:
- Review key ratios and spread analysis
- Identify if a credit union is doing well or poorly
- Learn a simple set of gauges a board should monitor
What will be covered:
- Gain a better understanding of ALM, one of the most important tools in financial management
- Risk intelligence: Understand why risk is important to success
- Learn the major risks credit unions face
- Learn about NEV, shock tests, and gap analysis and their relationship to ALM
