Executive Leadership on Succession Planning eSchool
Executive Leadership on Succession Planning eSchool
Overview
Great organizations have always needed great leaders, but now that need is critical. There is an unprecedented transition rate in the board room, executive management, and all levels of managers.
Every organization must realize that those in leadership roles are not permanent fixtures. The organization lacks control over when people leave. However, with strategic succession planning, the impact of the departure of a key leader or someone in a critical role can be minimized. Strategic conversations and actions should be a top priority for all organizations.
This four-part series provides guidance and tools that address the following
- Reasons for robust and systematic succession planning
- Elements of a best practice for succession planning
- Meaningful succession readiness and development plans
- A communication strategy and methods to assess the ROI on the succession planning investment.
Participants will walk away with a compelling narrative of why strategic succession planning makes sense today, as well as with clarity on what it takes to start a succession process, who should be involved, what employees want in development, and examples of project launch and management tools, development plans, and measures of success.

Schedule
April 7, 2025 | 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. CT
This first session highlights the risks and costs of not having a strategic succession planning process, and it shares some of the pain points you may experience, and the rigor and structure needed for a successful outcome. Integrated into the segment are the changing desires of associates/employees and how organizations are shifting to meet the needs of tomorrow. Included are Five Concepts of a succession planning framework and compelling distinctions between replacement planning and strategic succession planning. Features of the recent NCUA Final Rule, Succession Planning, and 12 CFR Parts 701 and 741 will be underscored.
April 8, 2025 | 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. CT
Clarity in management’s roles for succession planning is often overlooked or ignored and critical in determining the required level of effort and support. It is important to start by clarifying the program’s role, creating a strategic framework, identifying initial target groups, establishing lean processes for succession planning, establishing ownership and responsibility, and framing conversations with leaders who need to exit the organization or who are retired on the job.
Participants will receive a rubric to use in defining active and passive participants and planning processes, plus a way to formulate an approach to gaining support from leaders. A guide to a five-part meeting process to initiate strategic succession planning will be shared to help you start your own initiative.
April 9, 2025 | 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. CT
Too many leaders have a mindset that stops short of the talent problem rather than meeting it head-on and shifting the paradigm. A courageous conversation that uncovers the root cause of talent shortages in our organizations, as well as a framework and infrastructure to shift into best practices, is desperately needed.
This segment is action-packed, with many tools and processes to initiate a practical succession readiness and development program. Participants receive the following
- Guide for the practical 90-day check-in process for an internal candidate
- Framework for onboarding external candidates
- Broad assessment to measure the effectiveness of leadership and professional development plans
- List of blind spots to mitigate in advance
- Accountability matrix for strategic succession planning
- Process to identify what leadership behaviors are needed in our future leadership
- Guide to meaningful development plans
April 10, 2025 | 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. CT
How should succession planning be carried out in your organization? The answer to this question may vary by your culture, complexity, strategic trajectory, management values, and mission. The fourth segment of this eSchool examines the distinctions between an open and closed process, or blend, of succession issues. This segment also addresses transition management, particularly when a new CEO comes from the outside, and the established leadership team had flourished under the legacy leader.
Participants receive a guideline of five open-ended questions for robust dialogue regarding the effectiveness of a communication strategy. They also review the components and establish a succession communication policy. A step-by-step model decision-makers use to follow up on their commitment to strategic and systematic succession planning is available as a takeaway for your next leadership meeting.
The segment ends with three thoughts for the immediate future: (1) how to continuously improve the execution of a best-practice strategic succession practice in your organization; (2) considerations for the increasing influence of concerns by work-family balance and spirituality that must be integrated into your people development process; and (3) the intentionality of integrating career planning into long-term succession planning and the value of career and development coaches.
